Lloyds Register certifies MKM to ISO/TS 16949

Hettstedt, 15 December 2016. Lloyds Register has confirmed that MKM has successfully implemented the challenging ISO/TS 16949 quality system, and certified the organisation in November 2016.  The certification is considered to be of critical importance for automotive and capital goods industries. ‘We already deliver to large suppliers of the automotive industry, but we see further scope for development with opportunities within the growing market of e-mobility. For that reason we are investing in our production technology and development of new products as well as our quality and works processes ’, explains Roland Harings CEO of MKM.  Also MKM have recently had ISO 9001:2008 renewed which has been in place since 1993.

Copper demand set to rise with e-mobility

The market is attractive.  There is already up to six kilometres of copper cable in the electrical system of standard cars, and with the new modern car technologies this is set to rise significantly.  In hybrid cars this quantity doubles, in electric cars the demand is three times as high.  Compared to conventional cars using around 24 kilos of copper, this means a rise to 75 kilos per car.  According to the Fraunhofer-Institut, by 2050 around 20 per cent of the global demand for copper will be from the automotive industry.

Continuous improvement of processes

Within just one year, Klaus-Dieter Palm, Director of Quality Management at MKM, and his team have added ISO/TS 16949 to our long-standing ISO 9001 certification. ‘This standard reflects MKM’s company-wide commitment to continual improvement of all processes.  Our customers will benefit from the high standards we have set ourselves,’ explains Klaus-Dieter Palm.

Meeting the needs of our customers

MKM is the first producer of semi-finished copper products that has focused the entire organisation on the process philosophy set out in this standard.  For us, it means more than automotive: It means that we focus on improving our business processes, becoming more efficient and able to exceed the requirements of our most demanding customers.  For that reason we aim for constant improvement of all processes to ensure continued long-term competitiveness of MKM and our customers.
